Happy 7th birthday, Sweet Girl!

I remember her birth the clearest of them all.  It was such a happy, happy time.  I did not have the fears that I had when I gave birth to her older sister....it was just happy.  I remember that I got to hold her a couple of hours after she was born.  I didn't want to let go.  I really thought she was going to be a boy....so I was amazed that I was given another little girl.  I couldn't stop smiling at her.  The nurses finally came in and suggested they weigh her and get her cleaned up.  I did pass her over...although I didn't want to.

She was a super happy, smiley, beautiful baby.  She loved her big sister and I could carry her on my hip everywhere I went.  We were living in Dwight, IL during her early years.  In those days we didn't leave the house much.  We would stay in our PJ's most days and just play.

But then she turned 3....she was not as blissful.  She was snotty, opinionated, and her temper tantrums were huge.  She could be a very emotional little thing and most of the time it was best you didn't mess with her too much.  Once her brother came along she was a "typical middle child".  Life was not fair and she was going to let you know.  Her temper was HOT!

Then she went to kindergarten.  What an amazing change took place when she got a little independence from me and her sister.  She bloomed.  She has continued to bloom.  She is happy, smart, and wanting to please.  She has wonderful manners and loves to snuggle.  She is nurturing with her brother and other little ones.  I can almost always count on her to help me out when I need help.  Her downfall....she is a slob.  I did not know that until a few months ago.  I always blamed the girl's disgusting room on her older sister.  It was not until they separated into their own rooms that I learn Little Sis was the messy one.  To further the issue....she doesn't care about the mess and has no desire to pick it up!

But, that is okay.  I'll take the one bad with all of the good.  (And...I hardly set a shining example on how to keep things clean.)  My sweet second born is such a joy.

This picture is from today.
My little fashion diva laid her clothes out 2 days ago in preparation for today.
Happy Birthday, Sweet Girl!

Much better night...and random thoughts UPDATED

UPDATE:  We got out around 10:30 am and are now home.  The doctor did not have the results they wanted from the cultures (still inconclusive) but they let us go anyway.  Some cultures take 48-72 hours to grow.  We will be following up with him early in the week.   The rest of the post is from earlier this morning.

We are still  in the hospital.  The cultures from his surgery did not grow fast enough to give them the info they were looking for.  They won't let us go home until they feel comfortable to send him home on oral antibiotics.  Sleep last night was much, much better.  I slept with little man in his bed.  It was 1000 times better than the pull out couch.

I hope we can go home today.  Everyone is nice here....but there is no place like home!  Plus, I can't wait for Jonah to move around and not have tubes to get tied up in.

I'm so sad I'm missing church.  What a treat that we go to a church that you don't want to miss a  single week.  But....I think I'm just going to have to catch the service online this week.

I just made coffee in the hospitality room and it was like something off of Laverne and Shirley.  Water was pouring out and I was very flustered.  I eventually figured it out, but they really should post some directions.

Hubby and I were supposed to have a special date Friday night.  It was supposed to be a celebration.  Obviously we had to cancel, but I still want to give a shout out to someone who has changed the way we look at finances.....Dave Ramsey....you are a hero!

Speaking of finances....when we got rid of our TV service I thought we would be missing out.  But, as I flip through channels over and over again I realize that I don't miss it at all.  There is so much junk on TV.  I did watch half of an episode of Cupcake Wars.  That was fun.....but not worth paying for each month.

I have been watching a lot of Scooby Doo.  Little Man can't get enough.  The hospital has a pretty extensive collection of DVD's.  Annelise at this age was still watching Mr. Rogers and other PBS programming.  You can tell this boy has older sisters.  His programming taste is much more mature.  Not a good thing.....but the truth.

Praying today that the cultures will show something that can be treated with oral antibiotics and we can head home.  Worst case scenario (that I know of) is that this cannot be treated with oral and he will have to get a PIC line put in and he will go home on an IV.  I really can't image that.....but I guess that still puts us at home.

This is a crazy busy week for our family.  Tuesday night is the annual Bingo night at the girl's school.  Guess who is the chair for that event.  Yes....Me.  I think we are ready.....but I have not been thinking about it much the last two days.  I need to evaluate soon.  Then, this week starts Global Impact week at our church.  This is an exciting event where missionaries and their families from all over are coming to our church to get together and share their experiences.  There are events from Wednesday-Sunday that we will be participating in.  Thursday night we are hosting a missionary family at our home for dinner.  Oh....and did I mention that Thursday is also my daughter's 7th birthday.  See....we need to GO HOME!

We shall see.....

Nights in the hospital

My experience with over nights have been with the birth of Baby 1, Baby 2, and Baby 3.  All wonderful experiences of bonding with my new babies while being served food and being able to rest.  Blissful times.

I knew that last night with Little Man wouldn't be as blissful....but man....not even a little fun.  Sleeping on this pull out (8 months pregnant) was hard on my hips and legs.  I was up and down all night.  Alarms going off over and over.  Nurses coming in and checking his temp, blood pressure, ect....  No bliss.  Yes, I am complaining and I shouldn't b/c the patient slept like a champ until an alarm on his IV went off at a little before 5.  He slept through everything else. That is a blessing and maybe I'm a little jealous.

His surgery yesterday went better than expected.  It was originally thought from the MRI that there was infection in the bone and joint.  When they got in there (his RT index finger) they did not see infection in the bone.  They did take a piece to culture....but it looks like it was only in the joint.  They cleaned out the joint and closed it up without a problem.  (If you don't know the story....this all started with an splinter.)  We hope that he can finish this round of IV antibiotics and we can go home today.  But, we have to wait for the first set of cultures to come back.

There were many people praying out there and I could feel it.  Not only was the news good, I had a peace about me that is not normal in these type of situations.  So to the prayer warriors....THANK YOU!

I hope last night will be my last night in the hospital until I can again have a blissful experience with my new baby.  The countdown is on.  So for today....I hope we can go home!

I love this little guy.....but I can love him just as much at home :)

Sunday and Monday

On Sunday nights the girls and I head back to church.  I have small group and they have youth group.  That leaves the boys to find their own fun.
I think Daddy and Little Man both really love the guy time.
Yesterday they went hiking the trails.

This morning Big Sis came down ready for school.  Little Sis walked out of her bedroom with the same shirt on as her sister.  Now, Little Sis, being the fashion diva that she is, was not happy that they were in the same shirt.  (Big Sis could care less.)  Luckily, Little Sis let it go and it didn't become that big of a deal.  I had to take a pic of them before they left.  My beautiful girls....they are growing up so fast!

Valentines Day

I'm not a "Valentines Day" sort of girl.  I think it's because gift giving is not one of my "love languages".  I enjoy watching the kids get excited about their parties at school and their cards that they give out to all of their friends, but as for hoping and wishing for a special gift or surprise.....I could care less.

When I tell others that I don't want gifts from my husband for my birthday, Christmas, or any other holiday it almost sounds like I don't care about him or that our marriage is boring or sad.  That is the furthest from the truth.  I am so in love.....I am so thankful.....I am so blessed to be married to this man!

How did Ben and I end up together?  It was God's will at work!  At the time I might have seen things as coincidences or happenstances but I would never call it that again.  God knew who I belonged with and he presented me with the opportunity.  I'm so, so glad that I followed!

Our High School love affair only lasted a short 6 months.  His Mom, although I know she would never admit this to me, was not fond of me.  My Mom, on the other hand, was head over heals for Ben.  (She told me after we were married that although she thought Ben was the best thing since sliced bread, she didn't ever think we would work b/c we are both extroverts.)  So, we had a sweet 6 month love affair.  It was long enough that we both made a lasting impression on each other, but short enough that we both moved on without too much trouble.  (Well, maybe one of us had a little more trouble than the other.....I now recall a broken windshield in a car.....but I won't get stuck on those little details.)  Our fondness for each other did not disappear over the years, but our feelings for each other were demonstrated in friendship and not romance.  (Although, we both had some serious issues with each other's dating choices.)  We had a few brief encounters with each other early in college that could have led to something more, but as I see it now.....it wasn't our time yet.

So, now I am going to jump forward 5 years.  It was our senior year in college and I was healing from a very bad break-up.  Ben and I had not seen or talked to each other in a very long time.  One night in I was feeling very lonely.  The thought of Ben popped into my mind and I knew talking to him would pick up my spirits.  The problem was, I didn't know his phone number.  He attended a college an hour away from me....but luckily so did my sister.  So, I called my sister in the hopes that she could give me some info on how to get a hold of him.  As I was talking to her I heard a *beep* on my phone.  I clicked over to answer the new call and it was him.  Now, this was CRAZY WEIRD.  I have no recollection previous to this day of Ben EVER calling our apartment.  I was in shock!  (Do you see God working yet?)

We talked for about an hour.  He told me he was just checking in on me to see if I was okay after the break-up.  And.....just as I suspected, talking to him was exactly what I needed.

Okay....fast forward several weeks.

It was time to return to school after Easter Break.  My sister's school was on the way to my school so I stayed the night with her before planning to return to EIU in time for my morning classes.  When I went to my car that Monday morning I found my window smashed in a zillion little pieces and my purse gone.  I was upset but I handled it fine.  My sister called the police and with my permission headed off to her first class of the day.  After giving the police my report I thought I would get into my car and drive it back to school.  What I didn't think of was...

1) My car was full of glass
2) I didn't have a dime to my name to go to a car wash and vacuum it out.  All my money was in my stolen purse.

Sarah was gone, I had no phone, and I was in a real pickle.  I got into my car and drove to my ex-boyfriend's frat house in hope that one of our friends there could help me out.  I walked around knocking on doors and I had no luck.  Everyone was either in class or not interested in getting out of bed to see who was pounding on the door.

At this point I was feeling anxious and defeated.  I didn't even know how to get back to my sister's apartment.  I drove around the large town trying to decide how to handle this big mess. And there is was.....Ben's fraternity house.  This was nuts b/c I didn't know how to get to his frat house.  I was not familiar with the area and really didn't know how to get there.  (Again, God's hands are all over this!)  I went inside and was THRILLED to find Ben inside.  Because his fraternity was filled with some amazing gentlemen, there was a crew out cleaning my car before I even asked.  They swept it out and created a temporary plastic window to get me back to school.  They got it done just in time for the rain to start falling.  (SEE!)

There were two factors keeping me there that day.

One: I didn't want to drive in the rain and have my temporary window blow in on me.
Two:  I didn't want to leave Ben.

I don't know the actual moment or day that I knew Ben was the man I wanted to marry......but I can tell you it didn't take long.  We were engaged that December and married the next July.

There is not a day I regret marrying him.  We got married at 23.  We were still kids.  I feel so fortunate that we had the opportunity to grow into adults together and now we will be growing old together!

Why do we work so well together?

1)  We are fortunate to have the same needs.  Neither of us had to take much time figuring each other out b/c our "love languages" were the same.
2)  We both have forgiving hearts.  I think that is both part of who we are and part of what we believe.
3)  We both talk a lot and listen even more.  I know there are very few men out there that could or would be willing to listen to a women talk as much as I do.  I'm a lucky girl!
4)  We trust each other with our whole hearts.
5)  We don't get comfortable.  Marriage is work and we have seen too many marriages fall apart when people stop paying attention.
6)  We have a marriage based household.  Although we adore our kids....we come first.
7)  We are best friends.

We chat at least 4 times a day on the phone.
We always go to bed together.
We don't take each other's mood swings personal.
We hold hands.
We go on dates.
We don't take each other for granted.
We have always followed each other's dreams.

Together we have created what I have always dreamed of.......

And I know there will be days that our faith in each other and the Lord will be tested....but I have the confidence that we have a foundation that will not fall.  I believe our foundation is solid!

But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15

I can't wait to see what the Lord has in store for us next!

So, I wrote this to Thank God for leading me to Ben and Thank Ben for loving me so much!
Happy Valentines Day!

A poem by Big Sis

Peaceful Time of Peace

The world is a peaceful place,
We just have to look harder,
Peaceful time of year.
When you hear a soothing song,
When you hear a Christmas bell,
That just screams
Peaceful time of Year.
The world is a peaceful place,
We just have to look harder,
and hope harder,
and love harder.
