It's Good Friday.
I was feeling very "Christian" this morning.
I belted out the songs from the local Christian station all the way home from dropping off the kids.
I headed to my daily devotion flip calendar in the kitchen and flipped it to today.
(I had to flip it forward 20 days....I know, not practicing good lenton devotion)
And I read it.
It was Matthew 6:6.
When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.
Jesus spoke those words to the disciples.
He then continued to instruct his disciples on how to pray.
His instruction is what we now call "The Lord's Prayer".
He doesn't tell them that they must recite that particular prayer every day and night...
He lays it out as an example for prayer.
My rendition of the Lord's prayer:
We should start by giving God the Glory and acknowledging his holyness.
We should believe and say that God's plan is bigger than our plan.
We can ask that our daily needs be met.
And forgive us for all our screwups just as we have given grace to all those that have sinned against us.
(And if we have not forgiven our enemies this is a great time to discuss that with Him and do so.)
We can ask God not to allow trials so hard that it would entice us to be unfaithful to him.
And when we are temped and unfaithful please bring us away from evil and back to him.
He has given us an amazing model that I don't use it enough.
I actually don't even pray with my kids before bed.
Isn't that the traditional Rule #1 in Christian parenting.
I grew up for the most part in an unchurched home
and we still said the well loved "Now I lay me down to sleep."
Now, I am going to jump in and defend myself for a moment.
We do pray at dinner time and I pray for them each day in car line before school...
But night time....
NOPE!
NONE!
See, I grow horns on my head around 7:15.
I have no desire to give anything else to my children....
or if I'm being really honest....to God.
Today's devotional hit home. I should be praying with and for my children constantly.
I need to teach my children an example of going in their room,
closing the door,
and spending time with their Father.
Prayer and scripture is how we get to really KNOW him.
and
Prayer and scripture is how we get to really know HIM.
I know this to be true.
So why do I find ending the day giving God the glory he deserves to be soooooo hard?
Looks like I have something to pray about!
